Bonfires and festivals in the midsummer season

Events and festivals in midsummer

June on the Hochkönig is all about the midsummer festivals. The shortest night of the year is celebrated with various events; special highlights are the many bonfires on the mountain.

The alpine rose starts to blossom and the Hochkönig is covered with lush colours. June is the time of the “Almrauschblüte” (the alpine rose bloom) as well as time of the longest days and the midsummer bonfires. This month is perfect for hiking. Guest will be offered a diverse programme of activities, not only during the day. When it gets dark outside, there are various events taking place on the Hochkönig.

On the Salzburg mountains midsummer is traditionally celebrated with big and smaller bonfires. For the bigger fires locals and regional farmers collect and compile wood and build a high tower. In some places there are actual competitions as to who can make the biggest fire. And then in the evening the real festival starts: customs and dance are very much featured during these events. The Mühlbach Tanzlmusi's blowers perform and the Hochgründecker Schuhplattler dance. Guests are invited to try the traditionally alpine dance. You do need a bit of practise and skills but you might as well just give it a try. As soon as it gets dark the locals start the fire. On the panorama terrace at the Bergheimat Hotel you have the best seats for watching the spectacular mountain bonfires.

What makes the wonderful mountain region on the Hochkönig so special during the midsummer season are the additional tiny fires and torches that are put up all over the mountain. There are groups of people walking for several kilometres to spark fires on the mountain; and you can watch all this from the valley. Highlight of this tradition is the burning edelweiss on the Steinerne Meer, that the volunteer fire brigade organises. On the Hochkönig slopes you can also discover several bonfires. Take a seat on the panorama terrace and watch the fire spectacle on the mountain.
