What mountain equipment you need for hiking in the Salzburg Alps
Have you thought about everything for your hiking holiday? You must prepare properly to be able to enjoy your hike on the Hochkönig without any worries. The Bergheimat team will be happy to tell you what clothing you need, what should be in your rucksack and what are suitable provisions for hiking.
Hard-wearing and weather-proof clothing
Before hiking remember that it is often windy up the mountain. You should therefore have plenty of warm clothing as well as a hat or headband, depending on the time of year, with you. The onion principle applies when getting dressed so that you can put on and take over layers as required: functional underwear on the bottom that transports sweat away from your body, on top of that a warming fleece layer and for outerwear a water and wind resistant jacket. With this you need hard-wearing long or short trousers as well as functional socks. Ankle-high, sturdy mountain boots are a must up the mountain!
What to put in your hiking rucksack
- Rain protection
- Sun cream, head gear, sunglasses
- Drinking bottle with 1-3 litres, as required
- Pocket knife
- Hiking map
- Telescopic walking poles
- Spare t-shirt
- Compass or GPS device (for geocaching)
As a hiking hotel awarded with a quality seal, you can find the best conditions for hiking at the Hotel Bergheimat. Besides detailed hiking literature, you are welcome to borrow telescopic walking poles, rucksacks or rain protection from us at reception.
The right provisions when hiking
Away from the region’s mountain inns, you should pack your own provisions for tours that last several hours. A good and healthy snack are sandwiches, plus vitamins in the form of bite-sized fruit and vegetables. Snacking in between is also good: sweets are not just a reward and motivation but supply energy quickly. Glucose, trail mix and muesli bars are also suitable for energy.
In the morning a generous breakfast buffet prepares you ideally for your hike at the Hotel Bergheimat. Top up your energy stores with organic bread, homemade jams, mountain cheese, muesli, yoghurt and many other delicious treats. After a longer hike, a lunch break at one of the mountain inns on the Hochkönig with panoramic view is wonderful before you set off on your return.
